Mission Statement

The mission of Park Elementary School is to lead all students to reach their potential in a positive, nurturing, and challenging environment where children succeed cognitively, socially, and emotionally through shared responsibility of school, family, and community.

Educational Program:
Park staff offers quality Language Arts instruction based on best practices in reading and writing.  Our program delivery is an eclectic approach structured according to the individual needs of students.  Our balanced reading program includes phonics, literature, shared and guided reading, whole group instruction, and small group direct instruction based on ability grouping.  Students are assessed according to the state content standards in all curriculum areas.  The standards are clear guidelines against which individual performance and progress can be judged.  Everyday Mathematics is an enriched, comprehensive, and balanced mathematics curriculum for grades Pre-K-6.  Students learn computational skills as well as a broad range of mathematics concepts including data and probability, geometry and spatial sense, measures and measurement, algebra and uses of variables.  Districts from all over the country have reported strong evidence of dramatic improvement student achievement and test scores.  Our district has adopted the FOSS(Full Option Science System), which offers strong critical thinking and applied learning opportunities.  FOSS integrates hands on, real world science with interactive materials in a dynamic learning environment.  Science and social studies are also integrated with math and language arts in a hteme approach.  Physical education, music, art, and library skills are taught by certified specialists.  All students have access to computer technology, which is either in the media lab or in the classroom.  Each classroom has IBM computers with Internet access.

Special Services:
Park School has an exceptional Special Education program. Our resource teacher serves students with special learning needs. We also have mainstreamed as much as possible according to each child’s individual education plan. Our English Language Learners program services students who have another language influence. The ELL program has one full time and one half time teacher along with one full time instructional aide, who currently services 65 ELL students. Park has three ¾ time Title I reading teachers who are able to service all students at Park since Park is a School-Wide Title School. Gifted students’ educational needs are served by an Independent Study teacher three days a week. IS students are involved in higher-level thinking activities and experiences. A full-time counselor is available for students on a daily basis to support social, academic, and emotional needs. Park’s music teacher, who is also certified in Spanish, teaches Spanish during the school day to kindergarten and first grade students. Second through fifth grade students have after-school Spanish clubs. San Juan Board of Cooperative Services provides many services as needed, such as occupation or physical therapy, speech/language, hearing and psychological assistance. Park offers a great Headstart Preschool program. There is a very successful FLAG program (Families Working and Growing Together), as well as an active P.A.D.R.E.S. group of parents who speak a second language
